Christmas 2008

Wednesday, 31 December 2008 18:02 by robbi

As the saying goes, life goes on. We’ve had a couple of unsettling months here, but despite all that we figured our furkids still deserved a Christmas celebration. We decided to have a very quiet, low-key Christmas with just us and the furry ones.

This was actually Maggie’s first Christmas with us, so we had to make sure she enjoyed herself. I’m not sure she completely understood everything that was going on though.

Maggie

But of course the other guys know all too well what Santa brings:

Pressies!

Yes, they all gathered ‘round to see what the big guy brought them this year:

Gathering

Of course there’s always someone wanting to jump the queue. This year Charlie was a bit over-eager and had to be reminded to wait his turn.

Wait....

Denny always waits so patiently for his turn…

Who's first???

We know that Phebes is always a bit hard on her presents, but this year she was particularly brutal to her new toy. That thing had the squeaker and half it’s stuffing ripped out within 1 minute of being opened!

Poor Rudolph

And then she moved onto Maggie’s present…

Christmas Hedgehog

But Maggie got to wear a pretty sash, so she wasn’t too bothered. Doesn’t she look pretty??

Pretty Maggie

Of course everybody’s favorite presents were the biscuits! After everyone had a taste we had to put them away for fear that somebody would over-do it. Denny and Charlie were devastated.

But I'm STARVING!

Please, sir, may I have some more?

So there you have it, our Christmas with our puggies. This year especially, we are grateful for having them here with us, healthy and happy.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot. I tried my hand this year at making a chocolate pecan pie (sugar free, of course) It turned out nicely. So good, in fact, that we’re making another one for New Year’s Day. Here’s the Christmas one pre-baking:

PIE!

I’m no Martha Stewart, but Richard doesn’t seem to be complaining!

Happy New Year everyone!!!! I just KNOW that 2009 is going to be better.

Sweet Dreams Samson

Our sweet, beautiful, brave Samson is gone. His fight is over.

Most of you probably already know this by now, but I have been unable to write anything until today. Though even now I am sobbing.

We never knew Sammy as a healthy dog. I wish I had – he must have really been something in his prime. Considering how stubborn and resilient he was even in sickness, he must have been a force to reckon with when he was healthy. We jokingly called him our little boxer. His front legs and neck were pure muscle. They had to be considering his poor balance. Richard would sing “So You Wanna Be A Boxer” from Bugsy Malone to him. His eyes would light up and his tail would wiggle. He was happy here. And loved. We were a family. I know he never had that before and it gives us great comfort to know that we were able to give him a loving environment that he could call his home.

As is always the case, we really were hoping for more time with him. We knew his brain tumor would eventually take him from us, but we still weren’t fully prepared to let him go. He began having seizures a few months ago which we knew was a sign of the tumor’s progression. But he hadn’t had one in a while so we thought we had more time.

Samson

On Wednesday, Dec 3rd he had a restless night and in the morning he was not right. He perked up a bit as the day went on but wasn’t 100%. Thursday morning he was worse. He had suffered a stroke. He seemed slightly better Thursday night but then Friday morning he was worse again. He stopped eating and drinking. He seemed to decline as the day went on. That evening he had another seizure. His breathing became increasingly labored. The spark had gone from his eyes. It was time.

Friday night, surrounded by those who loved him, he went peacefully into that good night.

He was a beautiful, spirited boy. We were so lucky to have known him. He has touched our lives deeply. I miss him terribly but know that he is at peace, finally able to run again and breathe easily.

Thank you Sammy for sharing your life with us.

Biggest Full Moon in 15 Years!

Tonight's full moon in the Northern Hemisphere is the biggest it's been in 15 years.   So I took a couple of shots and got this.

Full Moon from Seabrook, Texas.

Endeavour. Meet Endeavour.

Thursday, 11 December 2008 17:20 by richard

Space Shuttle Endeavour will flew by Johnson Space Center today, circling over JSC between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. while mounted on a modified Boeing 747 shuttle carrier aircraft.

Although a stop at Ellington Field is was planned, the Endeavour flew by and was visible from Ellington Field and the Sonny Carter Training Facility before passing over JSC.

After landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Nov. 30, Endeavour is on its cross-country journey back to the Kennedy Space Center.

I took these shots from the Boat Launch near the Clear-Lake Hilton, just about half a mile from the JSC complex.

(Clear Lake got it's first High Rise last year, called Endeavour Tower.  I just happened to be in the right place at the right time when the 747/Shuttle package flew by)
